Deputy national police chief Adul Sangsingkaew said that from last October until now, the number of attacks in the three restive provinces _ Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat _ had declined by 500 incidents compared to the same period of the previous year.
The courts handed down verdicts in around 111 cases of insurgent activities. In these, 14 people were given the death sentence and 50 were given a life sentence, Pol Lt-Gen Adul said.
He said the improvement was due mainly to cooperation by residents who want to live in peace.
The improving conditions are also indicated by the high demand for books which promote a peaceful understanding of Islamic beliefs.
Pranai Suwannarat, director of the Southern Border Provinces Administration Centre (SBPAC), said yesterday that 100,000 government-sponsored books, entitled Islam and the Need-To-Know Truth and Lectures by World Muslim Leaders, ran out immediately thanks to full attention from religious leaders, community leaders, students and local residents.
The books were freely distributed at the SBPAC office.
Mr Pranai said his agency joined hands with an advisory council of religious experts under the SBPAC and an association of southern religious schools to publish the books.
To cope with the high demand, Mr Pranai said, more copies of the books would be printed
