BANGKOK, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- Thai officials will go to Britain by October at latest to find ways to extradite ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and his wife to face charges in Thailand, Thai state run Thai News Agency said on Thursday.
The team will consist of prosecutors and senior officials from the Foreign Ministry, who will discuss the extradition laws with British officials.
Speaking on the extradition treaty between Thailand and Britain, Samphan Sarathana, Thailand's chief prosecutor for foreign litigation, said so far as British law is concerned, the couple has not been found to have committed any wrongdoing in doing business with government agencies while Thaksin was in power.
Therefore, there is a need for officials of the two countries to discuss other avenues to extradite Thaksin and his wife Pojaman, now living in London, to fight charges in Thailand, said Samphan.
The couple are facing arrest warrants after they failed to appear in the Supreme Court on Aug. 14 to defend charges over the land purchase in Bangkok's prime business area by Pojaman at a much below-market price while Thaksin was the prime minister.
Noppadol Pattama, legal advisor to Thaksin, has said Thaksin would certainly not return to Thailand, citing safety reasons.
Thaksin had earlier announced that he would return only after a general election has been held and democracy restored in Thailand.
