Bush says U.S. won't attack North Korea

WASHINGTON -        President Bush called Wednesday for stiff sanctions on        North Korea for its reported nuclear test and asserted that the United States has "no intentions of attacking" the reclusive regime.

In a Rose Garden news conference, Bush said the United States remains committed to diplomacy, but also "reserves all options to defend our friends in the region."

He also vowed increased military cooperation with allies, including bolstering ballistic missile defenses in the region and increased efforts to prevent Pyongyang from importing missile and nuclear technology.

More than 650,000 people have been killed since the start of the war in Iraq, new research has claimed.

The figure, published in the respected medical journal The Lancet, is far higher than previous estimates.

It has been calculated by a team of US and Iraq researchers who said 600,000 of the deaths were caused by acts of violence.

Gunshots were the leading cause of death (56 per cent) while airstrikes, car bombs and other explosions each accounted for 13 per cent to 14 per cent.

Almost 60 per cent of the deaths were among males aged 15 to 44.

Previous estimates released by the White House in 2005 suggested around 30,000 civilians had died as a result of the conflict and its aftermath.
