"He is a good guy and he has my sympathy," Bush told The Nation on Tuesday during a meeting in the Oval Office of the White House.
He said the last time he met Surayud he could not say when the election would be held.
"I met him again - this time he said the election is coming. That was good for him," he said, adding: "I am happy with that." When Surayud met Bush on the sidelines of the Apec meeting in Sydney last week, he briefed Bush on progress on the political front and the scheduled election on December 23.
Bush said he remembered the deposed Thaksin Shinawatra, who met him informally on three occasions during his premiership from 2001 to 2006.
"But he got caught, huh
" he said, referring to the recent court charges over the allegedly fraudulent declaration of the ownership of his company and the Ratchadaphisek land scandal.Bush was welcoming the four recipients of the Democracy Award by the National Endowment for Democracy from Thailand, Russia, Egypt and Venezuela.
In an hour with the group in his office, Bush was candid and discussed without any assistance from aides his views on democracy and human-related issues around the world.
"I believe in universal values. I believe in democracy," he said. He also spoke of his childhood when he grew up in Midtown, Texas, a small town with a strong Christian tradition. "I believe in doing good. That was the way I grew up," he said.
Bush also revealed that after his retirement he would like to set up a democratic institution so that he can continue his work in the promotion of democracy.
"America is living a too comfortable life, we have to go out and understand the world," he added.
Bush was in an exuberant mood during the meeting and was very engaging in tackling issues that effected democracy in Russia, Egypt, Venezuela and Burma. He knew victims of human rights abuses from North Korea, Egypt and Russia by name.
He wishes to see Burma become a democratic country and opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi released so that he could meet her personally.
He also recalled a meeting two years with Charm Tong, the young Shan lady who authored "Licence to Rape", a report that detailed the systematic rape of minority women by Burmese troops. "She is very brave and she inspired me."
Laura Bush, he reiterated, is very interested in the Burmese plight. "She has a genuine concern for the Burmese people and its democracy," Bush said of his wife. He said she was also concerned about the women of Afghanistan and malaria.
After the discussion, he showed the visitors the Rose Garden, which is next door to his Oval Office. "It is a nice garden. You should see that," he said.
