Dual eclipses foreshadow more political chaos in Thailand

Bangkok - With Thailand set to witness both a lunar and solar eclipse this month, some astrologers are warning the dual phenomena foreshadow more political chaos on the horizon for the kingdom, media reports said Saturday.

According to the Thai Astronomical Society, a total lunar eclipse will be visible in Thailand on Sunday at 4:30 am, while a partial solar eclipse is scheduled on March 19 at 7 am.

What is good news for astronomers is bad news for the country's political scene, according to at least one leading soothsayer.

Boonlert Pairin, a former senator and well known astrologer, said that while a lunar eclipse relates to the fate of the people, a solar one concerns the government, and having both in the same month is not a good sign.

He warned that political chaos and conflicts were in the cards for March and April, reported the Bangkok Post newspaper.

Thailand has had its fair share of political chaos over the past year already. There were nearly daily anti-government protests in March and April of last year, a general election on April 2 that was eventually annulled, a coup d'etat on September 19 that ousted former premier Thaksin Shinawatra, bombs in Bangkok on New Year's eve that killed three people, bombs and arson attacks on February 18 (marking the lunar New Year) that killed eight in southern Thailand, and most recently the resignation of the finance minister on Wednesday that is expected to lead to a cabinet reshuffle next week.
