Thaksin headed for Singapore?

By MARSHA TAN

KUALA LUMPUR: Ousted Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra may be bound for Singapore where his wife arrived late Tuesday night.

It was learnt that Thaksin left New York on a private plane to London after he cancelled his speech to the United Nations General Assembly Tuesday.

It was reported that his wife Pojaman Shinawatra left Bangkok just minutes after tanks started rolling into the Thai capital late Tuesday night.

She arrived in Singapore and is said to be staying with the Thai delegates attending the World Bank/IMF meeting in the island city. It is not known if Thaksin will seek to stay on a long-term in Singapore.

However, Singapore media dismissed the idea of Thaksin staying on as most of his assets are said to be in the United States and Britain.

Several attempts to contact the Royal Thai Embassy in Singapore failed.

A spokesperson from the embassy in Malaysia said the lines could be busy from people calling in for enquiries and information after Thai military imposed martial law.

At the moment, Thai commander-in-chief Sonthi Boonyaratglin is holding the reins of the country’s administration without a government title.
