Mitsubishi to build plane-parts factory in Vietnam

TOKYO: Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, the largest aerospace company in Asia, said it would build a factory in Vietnam to make parts for commercial planes, setting up the first aircraft-related production facility in the country.

The $7 million factory in Hanoi will start production in 2009, assembling wing flaps for Boeing's 737s, Mitsubishi Heavy said Tuesday.

The facility will initially employ 50 workers and put together flaps for two to eight planes a month for the second-largest commercial aircraft maker in the world, Mitsubishi Heavy said.

Mitsubishi Heavy will follow Airbus, Boeing's bigger rival, in shifting some production to nations in Asia and Eastern Europe to benefit from cheaper labor costs.

Vietnam expects foreign investment to rise to $16 billion this year, as economic growth and improved infrastructure lures overseas investors.


Sarkozy's China Visit A Boon For Airbus, Areva

French President Nicolas Sarkozy, shaking hands with his Chinese counterpart, Hu Jintao, on Monday clinched major contracts to sell Airbus planes and two nuclear plants to China, claiming credit for helping boost French exports by around $30 billion at a time when labor discontent back home is at a high pitch.

Chinese airliners have agreed to buy a total of 160 Airbus planes for more than $17 billion. The signing ceremony was held Monday in Beijing's Great Hall of the People during Sarkozy's visit. The deal includes orders for 110 planes of the short-haul A320 family and 50 A330 wide-body passenger jets, according to Agence France-Presse. Ten of the A330 medium- to long-range commercial planes are being sold to Guangzhou-based China Southern Airlines.

Aiding its ambitions to seize a bigger market share in the booming Chinese aviation market, where domestic air traffic is expected to double every five years, Airbus is building an assembly plant in Tianjin, , its first outside of Europe, with the aim of turning out 300 Chinese-made A320 commercial jets in the seven years starting from 2009.
