Shinawatra University, founded by ex-PM, falls on hard times
SIU is running in the red, has fewer students

Pathum Thani _ Shinawatra University (SIU) has been having a rough time lately, just like its namesake founder, deposed prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra. The university is running in the red and the number of local and foreign students is shrinking.


The university, which opened in 1999, was said to be a bid by Mr Thaksin to give Shin Corp profits back to society.


Financed by the Shinawatra family to the tune of up to one billion baht, the university in Pathum Thani's Sam Khok district became the country's first cyber university, with wireless internet available in all classrooms.


It offers international programmes in three major fields _ engineering, architecture and business management.


SIU has been in trouble since the telecommunications giant changed hands and Mr Thaksin was ousted from power.


Acting university rector Prida Wibulswas said the number of undergraduate and graduate students had dropped from 383 in 2005 to 320 last year.


He said he did not have the 2007 figure, saying only that undergraduate students outnumbered graduates.


The university is shifting its focus to its master's and doctorate programmes.


''Our goal at the start of the university was to have a pool of 2,000 students, welcoming 125 undergraduate freshmen and 100 graduate freshmen each year. But we have been far behind target,'' said Mr Prida.


According to the SIU website, eight master's degree students and 27 bachelor's degree students graduated in the second semester of the 2006 academic year.


''The university is running in the red, losing 40 million baht a year. But this is a problem facing quality universities worldwide,'' said Mr Prida.


''The university spends 150 million baht a year paying its professors, 70% of whom hold PhDs. We also set aside 40-million-baht scholarships to draw the best brains,'' he said.


He admitted that Mr Thaksin's ouster in the military coup last September resulted in the university losing all self-funded Thai applicants to undergraduate schools, who previously accounted for one-fourth of undergraduates.


He said that despite its name, the university administration is free from political interference.


''Mr Thaksin's brother-in-law Bannapot Damapong holds the licence for the university's operation. We have a panel of outside professors monitoring academic quality,'' he said. He maintained that the freezing of the Shinawatra family's assets would not affect SIU's financial status. Its endowment fund now stands at 300 million baht.


He hoped the forthcoming general election would pull the university out of a public confidence crisis.


Deputy rector Suravuth Pratishthananda said that since Mr Thaksin's assets were seized, foreign students have been worried the university might go under before they complete their studies.


Government officials were reluctant to further their studies at SIU due to its association with the former premier. Some foreign professors declined a position at SIU out of safety concerns following the coup.


''SIU is an academic community. We don't take sides. We are not aligned with any political party. We want everyone to rest assured,'' said Mr Suravuth.


Students at the university have mixed reactions about studying there.


Nithigan Tiaratanasit, a computer science junior, said: ''Half of the 60 junior students have dropped out, which leaves 15 sophomores and 21 freshmen at SIU.''


Some dropouts cited demanding coursework and long travelling distances for their decision to move to other colleges.


''After the anti-Thaksin protests [early last year], many parents were concerned that the university's association with Mr Thaksin would deprive their children of the chance to find work,'' Ms Nithigan said.


But Sohrab Navaee-Ardeh, an Iranian computer science senior, said the university's modern technology, excellent learning environment and abundant facilities all worked in its favour.


''The tuition rate is the same as in the US and Europe, but the cost of living is cheaper,'' he said.


Anupong Mutara-it, a computer science junior, admitted he would face a struggle to find a job. ''Students from other universities are keen to avoid me after learning that I come from Shinawatra University,'' he said.


Kobkiat sae Lim, a management technology junior who joined SIU when Mr Thaksin was at the peak of his political career, said he paid six-digit tuition fees every semester in the hope of securing a bright future, only to watch the university founder get toppled from power.

กะอีแค่ "ของเล่นคนรวย" ที่เอาไว้เสริมภาพว่ามี "ปัญญาบารมี"
และใช้เป็นสถานที่อวดโอ่ว่า "กูนี้คือผู้ประสิทธิประสาทปริญญา" ติดไปกับ "ภาพถ่ายบัณฑิตรับปริญญาบัตร" ให้ "คล้าย ๆ" กับ "ภาพการรับพระราชทานปริญญาบัตร" ของสถาบันอื่น ๆ
