BAGHDAD (AFP) - More than 34,000 Iraqis died violent deaths in 2006, often after being tortured,
a  United Nations report  has said as new attacks across Iraq left another 27 people dead and scores wounded.

Pointing to raging sectarian violence that has rocked Baghdad as the main cause of civilian deaths, the UN said Tuesday at least 34,452 Iraqis died in 2006, an average of 94 deaths per day.

Another 36,685 people were wounded in attacks around the violence-wracked country.

"The situation is particularly grave in Baghdad, where most casualties and unidentified bodies that are daily recorded also bear signs of torture," the report said.

It said that between November 1 and December 31 alone, at least 6,376 civilians were killed and another 6,875 wounded.

"Extra-judicial executions, rampant and indiscriminate killings of civilians went virtually unchecked during the months of November and December," the report said.

It said 3,462 people were killed in November and 2,914 in December, slightly down from October's death toll of 3,709,  the highest since the US-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003.
