Sneakers 'hurt Thai feelings'

The Foreign Affairs Ministry has instructed the Thai embassy in Canberra to warn the producers of sneakers bearing a print of the Thai flag and a garuda image that they should stop producing and distributing them as they hurt the feelings of Thais, deputy spokesman Kiattikun Chartprasert said yesterday. The move follows a public outcry over the product, sold on the website www.astoriaviii.com, and a discussion with the Culture Ministry.
Ladda Tangsupachai, director of the cultural monitoring centre, said the pattern on the sneaker, a handpainted motif on Nike products, offends Thai people. ''This design is profane as it capitalises on the garuda, which symbolises our beloved monarchy, and the national flag that Thais hold in high regard. The sellers hurt Thais' feelings when they put the sacred images on footwear products,'' she said.
